Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey. The city is located on the Bosphorus Strait near the western border of Turkey. Istanbul has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Over the course of many generations the city has served as the capital of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Latin Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul's history also gives it a unique relevance for adherents of the world's two largest religions.
